ELIA member's refugee initiative: The Publisher

14 maart 2016

The Publisher is an independent, non-profit digital online platform for stories and art made by refugees. The platform was built by 6 students from the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and 3 Syrian refugees.

The students were given an assignment to create an interdiscplinary project around a topic of their choice.  The refugee crisis resonated with all of them and they decided it was a topic they all wanted to address. They published a call for volunteer artists on the Facebook group for refugees in Nijmegen and soon they received positive replies from 3 Syrian refugees. Together with them, they set up The Publisher, a platform where refugees could share their art and their stories. The website was officially launched at Pakhuis de Zwijger on the 2nd of February 2016.

The Publisher has multiple contributors and categories from Poetry and Photography to Film and even a Food section. Their goal is to show that with creativity and co-creation we can overcome bias and with more information we can start a positive and clear conversation.

If you want to know more about their stories and posts follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Visit their website to read and browse through the works posted.
